The Car Maintenance Basics Every New Driver Should Learn

By Damien Gretka

Our Vehicle Maintenance Checklist For New Drivers

Whether you just got your driver’s license or have been driving for years, maintaining your car is important. After all, your car is one of the biggest investments you’ll make. Use this checklist to help ensure your car is always in peak condition.

Oil Changes

One of the most important things you can do to maintain your car is to get regular oil changes. Depending on your car’s make and model, most cars need their oil changed every 3,000 to 7,500 miles. However, it’s always best to consult your car’s owner’s manual. Neglecting to get your oil changed can lead to decreased fuel efficiency and engine damage.

Tire Rotations

Tire rotations are another important part of maintaining your vehicle. During a tire rotation, a mechanic will move your tires from one position to another. This helps promote even tire wear and can extend the life of your tires by thousands of miles. Most cars need their tires rotated every 5,000 miles or so. Again, it’s best to check your owner’s manual to be sure.

Fluid Checks

Your car has a variety of fluids that help it run smoothly and keep everything cool. These fluids include engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, windshield wiper fluid, and coolant/antifreeze.

It’s important to check all these fluids regularly and top them off as needed. These fluids typically need to be checked every 1,000 miles or so; however, some may need to be checked more frequently. Coolant/antifreeze, for example, may need to be checked every month or so during the winter months when temperatures are cooler.

By following this maintenance checklist, you can help extend the life of your car and prevent expensive repairs down the road. Remember to consult your owner’s manual for specific maintenance recommendations for your car model. And if you ever have any questions about maintaining your vehicle, don’t hesitate to take it to your trusted auto repair shop of choice for a professional opinion.
